lecture two notes: old vs new media

The pervasice-ness and inviniblity of media:
Media are seen to procide a sense of commonality between people. Media make many millions of people to understand the world in the same way.
A brief history of modernity:
With the rise in state bureaucracies, development of eduction and welfare systems, the growth of the urban proletaritat and bourgeois mercantile class, the rise of scientific rationality. In western eurpoe, first modernity was the initial movement from pre-modern society to modern society. Idea of class, race, nationality, religion are seen not to hace the power they did for those licing in secondary modernity. 'indicidualisation' typifies secondary modernity
Back to "old" and "new" media debate:
1. Techological determinist
2. Computer-based deeply effected by the effect of earlier mediation.
3. Discuss the effect of media
4. What is new from many different dirctions
Five types of 'yardstick': systemic, technical, aesthetic, logical and political
Systemic consideration: Owership, Regulation and Access
Technical consideration: Electric vs Non-electric, Analogue vs Digital
Aesthetic consideration: New media was differences from old media in look, taste, sound, smell and act.
Remediation:
New media will not dramatically different in look the style of the old media.
Logical considerations:
Old media needed large capital, cultural and technical resources. The user of new media is no longer just a consumer. It is easy to become a new media author with typing errors, spelling mistakes, and factual inaccuracies.
New media is the effect that they hace no time and space.
